Earth-tone shadows, brought to life in his photographs, develop an almost bodily presence, the border between shadows and people often indefinable in his dense works. As if they were one, cause and effect melt, the rules of physics are overridden. People turn into patterns, patterns into bodies and bodies into linear entities. Everything flows, floats and swings in a meditative elegance that is assigned another level of meaning through their titles… |

When I first saw Andrew Miksys' Baxt I realized I was dealing with something a bit different. Let's face it: Most people only know the Roma ("gypsies") as a comedic backdrop from the movie Borat, and there still exist considerable stereotypes (and worse) about them. So I asked Andrew whether he would be up for a conversation about his work. Jörg Colberg: You spend a considerable amount of time in Lithuania, a country which also features quite prominently in your work. I'd be curious to learn why. Andrew Miksys: My father was born in Lithuania. He was very young when he fled Lithuania in 1944 with my grandparents to escape the Soviet invasion. They were middle class Lithuanians and feared being deported to Siberia. After a 50-year absence my father returned to Lithuania in 1995 to visit our relatives. I really didn't know that much about Lithuania and I went along reluctantly. Right away, though, I realized that it would be an interesting place to photograph. Lithuania was still a bit frozen in time. A lot of the villages hadn’t changed much in hundreds of years, and there were remnants of the Soviet Union everywhere. Since my first visit Lithuania has moved with stunning speed from a former Soviet republic to a thriving EU member and I've found a lot of material to photograph… Еще: …AM: About half way through my stay I came across a Roma family in Vilnius. I had no idea there were Roma in Lithuania and was surprised to find them here. I started to do more research and discovered that there were small groups of Roma in Vilnius and in many villages throughout Lithuania. At first it was very difficult to gain their trust. The Lithuanian press has done a great job demonizing the Roma and they're very reluctant to speak to journalists and photographers. Over time, though, I was able to make contacts and photograph. Once I got to know Romani people I realized very quickly that they are warm and generous people. My mother's side of the family is Italian and the Roma often remind me of my Italian relatives – very loyal to family, always wanting to feed you, talk to you, etc. I think it also helped that I gave people copies of the photographs I took of them. In almost any Roma home you'll find family photos everywhere and I think they appreciated this gesture. Now I'm often asked to photograph weddings and funerals in the Romani community… Jerome Liebling: My early studies with Jerome Liebling also had a big influence on my work. .html#more http://www.jmcolberg.com/weblog/conversations/ http://www.andrewmiksys.com/ |

Ранее упоминалось, ссылка списка l.a., рукотворные шедевры: http://www.21stphotography.com/process.htm The Platinum Series The Platinum Series of fine books represent the best we at 21ST have to offer. The hand-coated platinum print is esteemed as one of the most sumptuous and expressive forms of photographic imaging. Platinum prints provide the most expanded tonal scale of all graphic arts. They radiate a gentle warmth, detail even in the richest shadows, delicate whites, and an almost three-dimensional image depth. Since they require considerably more effort and the use of expensive precious metals, platinum images tend to be rare and unique. They stand today as one of the most ethereal and graceful forms of photographic expression, and a preferred medium of the masters. Editions in the Platinum Series of fine books can often take two to three years to complete. This timeline begins with the initial proposal to the artists and writers, followed by decisions on integrated bindings and handmade papers, laborious letterpress type-setting and printing, all leading up to the final assembly of each individual book. The end results are books that continue to win universal acclaim from collectors, critics and museum professionals from around the world. It is not uncommon for titles in the Platinum Series to sell out before they are even delivered to our collectors or for the value of these books to more than double in the course of a single year. It is the goal of the Platinum Series to bring the finest visions and voices together between the covers of the world’s most refined, handcrafted books. 21ST Editions — Publishers of Fine Art Photography Book PLATINUM SERIES John Metoyer Blood Migration Jefferson Hayman & MacLean Gander The New City Michael Kenna & Henry Adams Mont-Saint-Michel Greg Gorman The Odes of Pindar Sheila Metzner & Hart Crane The Bridge Flor Garduno The Sonnets of Shakespeare Eikoh Hosoe & Charles Baudelaire Flowers of Evil Sally Mann Sally Mann Arthur Tress & Guillaume Apollinaire Memories Robert & Shana ParkeHarrison & Morri Creech The Book of Life Listening to the Earth Joel-Peter Witkin & William Blake Songs of Innocence & Songs of Experience Sheila Metzner & Walt Whitman New York * Sally Mann Sally Mann Sally Mann Robert & Shana ParkeHarrison & Morri Creech The Book of Life Listening to the Earth Listening to the Earth, platinum prints by Robert ParkeHarrison, poems by Morri Creech http://www.21stphotography.com/platinumseries.htm |

Christine Roth, 2003, C-Print, 89"(H) x 72"(W) | Edition of Facial Texts: Mostly Legible, Riveting All By Nico Machida Informed by early exposure to both the populist eye of Annie Leibovitz and the formal austerity of Bernd and Hilla Becher, Martin Schoeller’s photographic portraits fill the rooms of Ace Gallery Beverly Hills with a tone of accessible gravity. Schoeller’s subjects are mostly familiar—well-known actors, politicians, musicians—and every so often unrecognizable; but all are presented via an unflinching close-up that at once decontextualizes and sharpens its contents. As a result each C-print proves a compelling visual text in its own right, an opportunity to precisely examine the complexities and contradictions of faces. But when hung in a large group, as they are now at Ace Gallery Beverly Hills, Schoeller’s photographs take on a haunting prosthetic agency, as if gazing back at the viewer from so many points.Their sustained intensity is at once potent and uncanny, especially in the Gallery’s vast central space, where the iconic Jack Nicholson (2002) joins the disfigured anonymity of Joseph Mosner (2004) in a panopticonic chorus of fixed, searching eyes. Here, as everywhere in the show, one crisp, frank, monumental image is arrayed after another, cohered around a logic of rigorous seriality, a potent spareness. One almost forgets that many of these are famous faces, as it becomes increasingly clear that Schoeller’s deft, assured representational style is very much this show’s point.

Because artists rarely see where their sold pieces reside, our patrons have graciously agreed to share their installations with our artists and viewers: Firsthand: Evocations of Figure and Form Jock Sturges, Kate Breakey, Ken Figueredo Small lives end every day—the unfledged bird fallen from its nest, the unwary lizard caught by a cat—as unnoticed in dying as they were living. Deeply moved by these small deaths since her childhood in South Australia, photographer-artist Kate Breakey has been photographing found animal remains since the mid-1990s, creating stunning, oversized, hand-colored images that—paradoxically—glow with life. Since 1980, Kate Breakey's photography has appeared in over thirty one-woman exhibitions and in over thirty group exhibitions in the United States, Australia, Japan, and France. It is also held in numerous public collections, including the San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, Arizona, the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin, the Australian National Gallery, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and the Art Gallery of South Australia, as well as various private collections. as18 Европа понемногу просыпается… После молниеносного показа в Париже примерно в те же сроки, что и громкая фотоярмарка, Frank Hülsbömer устраивает такой же стремительный показ в Берлине: Anatomie der Fläche / Piktogrammstudien Frank Hülsbömer M12 Berlin-Alexanderplatz D. Berlin, 31 Jan-02 Feb 2008 as64 Смотреть и читать: http://www.magda-gallery.com/ang/hulsbomerang.htm http://www.frankhuelsboemer.de/page2/page2.html http://www.frankhuelsboemer.de/page7/page7.html http://www.frankhuelsboemer.de/page8/page8.html (Frank Hülsbömer: the anatomy of surface: in his new series entitled “the anatomy of surface”, frank hülsbömer fills his surfaces with a semantic depth which appears diametrically opposed to the idea of surface itself. here surfaces are led to simulate objects via curves and kinks, alternatively becoming independent zones, configurations or positions, juxtaposed as they are with neighbouring surfaces and objects in contrasting shades. the photographs are digitally unmanipulated and only print optimised yet their rendering-like aesthetics suggest a binaric origin. connotations of bauhaus and russian avant-garde appear but, at the same time, hülsbömer ironizes their search for abstraction via fragmentation and reduction. one is reminded of the physical theories of the past century, yet these photographs constitute an independent visionary entity. all in all, hülsbömer’s work appears to have undergone an artistic development from an subjective capturing of existing spaces to the conceptually creative. the exhibition also includes the “remix” series, which contrasts one external and one internal image in a sequence of diptyches, comprehensibly charting the artist’s reversal — by association. magda danysz is also showing a series of works named: “family constellations” which is part of hülsbömer’s pictogram studies) |

р., Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts). 2006 Cao Fei was selected as most potential young artist in 2006 by CCAA ( http://www.vitamincreativespace.com/en/ ... artistId=9 ). We brush past history and tradition. We shake hands with them, we nod at them. It seems we can only be parochial and only sense the nonce. Our lostness manifests itself in handling the relationship between life and ourselves as an amusement. Thus, fun replaces our lostness and our being duty-bound not to turn back becomes such apastime too. We need to take colonists' attitude to re-colonize ourselves. We are the demiurges of era and the object of amusement all at the same time. Between the tradition and the modernity, there is no room for us to choose. They weigh the same for us, because we can't see the future and don't know the past. Lacking sense of duty and sense of guilt, we become passers-by of this age and rush through the history. Being too indifferent and too obsessed with acting, we become haughty celebrities of this age. Being honest and frank, we become victims, fragile and weak. Together we create the temperament of this age, those ingenious details, airy expressions and spectacles of over-consumption and thorough display of happiness. Is it we that are holding the age, or is it the age that starts to hold us? Let's set off from "us" and try to interpret the new youngsters' attitude towards life in China. Images of the Year 2007 — Portrait / Wedding Winner: Martin Schoeller New York City By American Photo Staff January/February 2008 © Martin Schoeller, Schoeller's portrait of George Clooney. In portraiture, how close is too close? When does a photographer cross the line and invade personal space? Martin Schoeller's images cross that boundary, and the result is often uncomfortable, if not for the subject, then certainly for viewers accustomed to seeing portraits that flatter and hide as much as they reveal. Working for magazines such as The New Yorker, Schoeller has, in the words of one of our judges, "invented a new style of portraiture that eliminates the visual clichйs of celebrity photos." Placing his Mamiya RZ67 Pro II 6x7cm SLR two to three feet from his subjects, Schoeller finds the unexpected in the familiar faces of people like George Clooney, Dame Judi Dench, and Henry Kissinger, all of whom he shot on assignment in 2007. He uses a Mamiya 140mm f/4.5 macro lens, a moderate-telephoto focal length, so that he can come in close without distorting the face. Says Schoeller, "My goal is to make the picture about the face and the expression. It is an objective or neutral way of looking at somebody." That goal unites the German-born, New York-based Schoeller with the famed German husband-and-wife team Bernd and Hilla Becher, whose studies of water towers and factories Schoeller admires. His portraits present us with an entire edifice of personality, not a mere faзade. © Martin Schoeller Schoeller's portrait of Judi Dench. Schoeller's portrait of Henry Kissinger. |
