Andrea Meislin Gallery

Yuval Yairi
PALACES OF MEMORY
JUNE 26-AUGUST 15, 2008

The show consists of seven new photographs and will be Yairi's second solo exhibition with Andrea Meislin Gallery…

…Following in the path of Simonides of Ceos, the Greek Poet and father of modern mnemonics, Yairi proposes that images are oftentimes easier to remember than abstract ideas or words. In order to remember large amounts of knowledge, people create places- either real or fantastic- within their imaginations. These "Palaces of Memory," as an idea and a term both over two thousand years old, are where one locates the mental images that symbolize the things they chose to remember. The process of remembering takes place as a "journey" through these spaces created by the mind.

Yuval Yairi works by an artistic process that mimics the natural process of memory. After choosing a space to photograph, the artist works meticulously frame by frame, moving the camera only slightly each time. In this way, for hours or days, he collects the details of the space into the camera's memory. The physical space becomes a part of both the natural memory of the artist and the artificial memory of the camera. When the artist later combines different parts of the space into one picture, it is a process of remembrance. Through this technique, Yairi both tries to intensify his own memory of the space as well as to stretch this memory beyond the limitations of one moment in exceeding the boundaries of traditional photography.

Furthermore, Yairi has chosen to depict locations that are well suited to the subject of memory. Places of personal memory, shared memory, historical memory, of preservation, of perpetuation, of forgetting and of denying. Places very different from each other, but nevertheless with a common thread: these are all places that were themselves palaces of memory or that could be used to create palaces of memory.

"Insight has launched an impressive art installation series entitled Dopamine, from setting up underwater art installations with surf actions shots in Bali and having re-created famous skate spots in the middle of the Balinese jungle.

The surf installation was inspired by Beatnick;, Steve Gorrow embarked on a journey beneath the sea to explore the depths of the mind and creativity. Along with the help of his brother, Steve shipped out to Bali to take on the massive feat of building above and beneath the sea to give birth to the latest Insight surf spectacle, and that is Dopamine. Not one to cut corners on creativity, Steve combined upside down bedrooms, naked girls on motor bikes and underwater shanty towns with the amazing skill of the Insight surf team (surfnics) and the photographic talents of Dustin Humphrey to create an array of split double world madness. Welcome to Insight's latest surf campaign featuring surfers Kai Otton, Luke Stedman, Warren Smith, Jared Mell, Made Lana,Jason Apparicio & The Jamaican Surf Team."
"Over the past five years, Humphrey, 31, has established himself as one of the surf-world's most forward-thinking photographers. Originally from Huntington Beach but now based in Bali, he's constantly evolving his craft, using different light, experimental equipment, unique angles and the world's best surfers as his variables. In addition, Humphrey has set a precedent in modern surf travel and documentation, partnering with Taylor Steele on trips to off-the-radar locations like Egypt and Italy. This combination of creativity and impeccable timing has enabled "D Hump" to become one of the most accomplished photographers of the 21st Century."

Riding a Wave with Dustin Humphrey

Sipping Jetstreams (Hardcover)
by Dustin Humphrey (Author), Photography (Illustrator)

http://www.amazon.com/Sipping-Jetstream ... 0977930009

The Metropolitan Museum of Art — Special Exhibitions
Photography on Photography: Reflections on the Medium Since 1960

Andy Warhol (American, 1928–1987)
Photobooth Self-Portrait, ca. 1963

This exhibition presents four decades of photographs by artists who have turned the camera on photography itself. In the early 1960s, the photograph—mechanical, reproducible, and found in every corner of the culture from the printed page to the passport and photo-booth—became the weapon of choice for artists such as Andy Warhol and Vito Acconci in breaking down the boundaries not only between mediums but between art and life itself. In the following decade, belief in the objectivity and neutrality of photography began to crumble along with all the received wisdoms of the period, and the aggressive and voyeuristic urges latent in the taking of and looking at pictures became the subject in self-portraits by artists such as Robert Mapplethorpe and Janice Guy.

In the late 1970s, Richard Prince and Sherrie Levine began making photographs of the photographs of others and claiming them as their own. Reflecting a moment in which technologies of reproduction such as the audio cassette and VCR were all but erasing distinctions between originals and copies, their strategy of appropriation wreaked havoc not just with photography but with our most cherished notions of authorship and originality. Images by others could also be the starting point for labyrinthine narratives where the viewer is led into a perceptual and epistemological hall of mirrors, as in Allen Ruppersberg's Miscellaneous Men (1977) and Lutz Bacher's Jackie & Me (1989).

Recent years have seen much hand-wringing about the future of the medium, as 150 years of analog photography rapidly give way to its digital successor. Traditional photography’s “slow” techniques and the carefully produced prints and books made for the exhibition and dissemination of images now seem as quaint as etchings to a culture increasingly dominated by screens over which pass an ever shifting array of text, still and moving images…

Quality Picutres is pleased to present Urbania, a three-person show that celebrates the city in all its gritty, techincolor glory. The three artists were chosend to partipate in the exhibiton because of their innovate way of approaching the repective mediums in which they work.

Gerald Slota creates photographs of hos own collage-like fabrications that in turn use found and created photographs as their basis. Slota works challenge the photographic notion of flawless surfaces and mechanical perfection. For the works in Urbania, Slota created images drenched in color and ambuguity that sit in stark contrast to the more traditional examinations of the city by Helen Levitt, Philip-Lorca Dicorcia and others. Slota has exhibited widely including solo shows at the prestigious George Eastman House in Rochester New York and at

These two giants of fashion photography have been crossing paths since the 1980s. Unlike their New York-based confreres, the German and the Italian have chosen to live in Paris. Christian Lacroix loves their photographs and characters in equal measure. He has invited them to exhibit at the Rencontres. At the Théâtre Antique, they will compare their shared visual territories and very different styles. In a bullfight, the mano a mano is when two top-ranking matadors take several turns each in the arena, seeking to outdo each other in the bravura stakes. Here, the sport is fashion.

In 1989 the fall of the Berlin Wall heralded the end of the East Block. Socialism and totalitarianism made way for capitalism and democracy. A unique reservoir of photography was buried along with the old values. Over the years, each of the member states of the East Block had developed its own photographic vocabulary, which almost never extended beyond its national borders. Now that memories of the Communist era are no longer welcome, this historically important body of photography faces the threat of remaining unseen forever.

Two decades after the end of the East Block, Noorderlicht unlocks this forgotten treasure. In service of the regime, independently or working underground, photographers in the East Block documented a now vanished era, each in their own way. Behind Walls, the 15th Noorderlicht Photofestival, offers an overview of their work, which is generally being seen here for the first time outside its country of origin. Never before has photography from all the former East Block lands been brought together in one large-scale presentation.…

Noorderlicht festival…

This 15th Noorderlicht festival is the fifth and last of the series with a non-Western region-theme, that is being held in Leeuwarden since 2000. Starting 2010 the event will take a new approach for bringing non-Western photography to the attention of the West.

Rena Small: Artist's Hands

Artists' Hands began in 1984 in New York City, during a time when Jean-Michel Basquait was on the cover of The New York Times Magazine, an honor usually bestowed to someone much older, and the current art scene was all a flutter about the new generation of under 22 year old artists. Artists like me, then 29, were considered over the hill and artists in their 40s weren't even being considered. Since these notions seemed absurd to me, I had to retrace my steps living through this current event art history and seek out those artists I knew to be substantial and reacquaint myself with their new art. That is not to say that I didn't think that Basquait wasn't worthy, he was a great artist for sure. Artists' Hands, the concept emerged as a result and gave me direct contact with artists I admired and an opportunity to document a part of our talking shop experience to inspire our mutual development as artists.

Each artists' hands portrait session is a Happening, an arrangement of preplanned elements…

…Once we arrive together, and sometimes, that appointment could take anywhere from 2-4 weeks generally, 6 months, or 24 hours as with Jean-Michel Basquait at the request of Andy Warhol, to ten years, as it did with Robert Rauschenberg, to be scheduled and confirmed; their hands move unconsciously while we talk shop about their work, ideas, passions from their heart and I listen, respond as the elements of performance art are activated in the art making process too. My role is to simply stop them when I observe the gestures that are crucial for some unknown reasons. That is the art of it for me, those unknown moments of reason.

Before hands, I had religiously been performing and photographing my back from 1977-1982, using an SX-70 Polaroid, in the moment or other large scale cameras, with text. The concept of artists hands emerged after my previous large scale work of 21, 20 x 24 inch Polaroid's "Flag Series, a Piece for Peace"…

…Hands and life hold secrets.

Online exhibition —

Kamil Vojnar: Flying Blind

D’log: …nu-real photographer/artist, Kamil Vojnar, a Czech creative (Flash site). As with almost all such photocompositors, the flight/levitation theme dominates.

http://www.d-log.info/?p=2891

After years of making images for book and CD covers in New York City, I have found refuge in St. Remy de Provence, France, where I am now fully concentrating on creating of my own personal world of images.

What drives my work is the contradictory world surrounding us.
So much beauty and so much suffering meet and go hand in hand.
But also it is the world of "elsewhere". The world from where inspiration and intuition, leading my hand, arrives. From that space between the earth, the sky and our minds and hearts, where things happen, we don't fully understand, but without which the world would be much grayer place.
I am trying to explore corners of our souls, where emotions reside. Emotions as reactions to the world outside and conflicting emotions of our most private worlds within. Because don't we cry from immense sadness, but from happiness as well?

My working methods are pretty much "flying blind", because as a photographer and painter am basically self taught. Mostly oblivious to proper techniques and processes, I mix elements the way we reconstruct our last night dreams. From bits and pieces. I let intuition and materials, I am working with, to lead me to conclusions, I never really see as fully finished and I revisit my images over and over again to place them in different logic and contexts.

My pictures are mostly images, digitally layered from many different photographs and textures, printed after in small editions, as a ink-jet prints on fine art paper. Or they are layered images, printed on semitransparent Thai and Japanese papers, mounted to canvas, varnished with oil and wax, sometimes painted on further with oil paints. I don't know where I am going, but I will get there.

Sylvain Lagarde

"...Photography or the art to think from the eye, well opened..."

I have always taken photos : just to keep a scene, a mood in my mind... But it was an art of memory for a young man. My first artistic pleasure was to write. I don't know precisely when and why, but this two passion were conjugated for me : words can be combinated into images, and images can recall some poetic words and thoughts.

In fact, photography is a way to kill the time and preserve a vision, an impression, a feeling. When I want to shoot something, to fix an instant in time, it is that something, for me, makes sense : for my eye (an aesthetic pleasure), for my heart (an emotion), for my head (i think that an image can always be analyzed an interpreted). So, my photographs are a visual kaleidoscope which composes a "point of view" on the world : that is to say a particular look (that does not mean original ; on the contrary, sometimes), an opinion, and a mood at some point. .

Mnémospection

It is a word - a personal neologism - to suggest that memory use partly (principally?) the look. The "mnemospection" is what is worthy of being saved from forgetfulness. So you will find here some examples of these fragments of space picked up by the eye at some point, some areas which spontaneously have provoked an interest which very subjectively was worth being kept.

Black and white photography is for me a monochrome expression which is able to go to the spirit of everything because it eliminates the "superficiality" of colors. It does not mean that color does not have his deserve. Color imposes another vision. But black and white photography is the way i use to reach essence, because it's a "realistic abstraction of the reality" .

If my photographic interests are very variable and various, i hope however that a coherence "speaks" : that of a search of the shape, between strict geometry and harmonious lines of the nature, between a world without human trace and the ghostly presence of human beings. I hope also this personal tendency is not only a simple formalism but a way to underline the "je ne sais quoi" which gives to an image a soul, even if there is no human life in the frame.

Sylvain Lagarde
