Notation

An exhibition by the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, and the ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe

"Notation" focuses on the multifaceted range of artistic processes that exists between the concept and the work. Works from all realms of art and dating from 1900 to today are placed in relation to one another: sign systems to do with literature, music, painting, choreography, architecture, photography, film and media art. Approximately 450 artistic approaches by more than 100 artists have been brought together from international collections, the ZKM | Karlsruhe and the archives of the Akademie der Künste.

By linking scientific calculation and artistic form, 20th century artists were in a position to render new realities visible. Modernism rediscovered the spiritual side of existence, immaterial phenomena, the ephemeral - morphic resonances, serial structures and sound waves - as a field of research for the arts. Thus the relationship between concept, notation, repetition and work was radically redefined; resulting in the draft processes themselves becoming autonomous artworks. These are now the main focus of the exhibition curated by the image-theorist Hubertus von Amelunxen, the artist Dieter Appelt and the media artist Peter Weibel. The exhibition was developed in collaboration with Angela Lammert from the Akademie der Künste, and Bernhard Serexhe from the ZKM | Karlsruhe.

LUMIERE is a series of photographs inspired by both the freedom of the ocean and the storming of the Bastille. The symbol of the birth of the modern French nation, Muller reinterprets the iconic, historical event as his personal uprising as an artist. About Muller's exhibition, gallery owner Guy Hepner said, "Lumiere represents further demonstration of the experimental and dynamic working methods of Michael Muller. Photography is transcended; the work represents a thought provoking juxtaposition to contemporary photography"…

Gallery Camera Work in Berlin presents from September 20th until November 15th an exhibition of fashion photography of the 20th and 21st centuries. This group exhibition provides a representative overview of the development of fashion photography from its beginnings in the 1920s to the present time. With over 250 works of a total of 65 photographers - many of which are vintages —- one can trace the different trends of fashion photography.

The spectrum of the photographs on display ranges from the sometimes classic compositions of an Edward Steichen to the experimental photographs of Man Ray, from the sexual revolution to the resulting emancipation of women as shown, for example, by Helmut Newton, from the cool elegance of the 1990s — influenced by Peter Lindbergh — to the highly imaginative works of a Tim Walker. Only a handful of exemplary trends of the comprehensive exhibition have here been mentioned. Photography and painting hybrids by Michelangelo Di Battista and Tina Berning complete the exhibition by successfully visualizing the strong orientation of fashion photography towards the fine arts.

Even though Adolphe Braun can already be seen as a fashion photographer avant-garde in the mid-19th century, photographers on display in the exhibition such as Adolf Baron de Meyer, Edward Steichen, and George Hoyningen-Huene are more commonly thought to be the founding fathers of fashion photography. The creation of "Condé Nast Publications" in 1909 along with its later purchase of "Vogue" (published for the first time in 1892) particularly helped fashion attain its triumphant worldwide success through photography. In works by Horst P. Horst and Irving Penn it is already noticeable that clothing is successively stripped from its previously central focus in fashion photography. Indeed, instead of fashion, figuration and increasingly expensive arrangements as well as interpretation moved to the foreground.

Rankin — Visually hungry

Кроме Dazed&Confused в числе проектов Ранкина — цифровое телевидение Dazed&Confused, Аnother Magazine, журнал о моде Rank, рекламные видеоролики для Guinness, Rimmel, H&M, а также полнометражный фильм "The Lives of the Saints" о том, что наши желания опасны, а последствия их исполнения непредсказуемы.

Он составлен из многих серий — "Me, me, me" (автопортеры за 20 лет, напоминающие иногда эксперименты Мэтью Барни), "Palaroids", "Tuulitastic" (снимки музы Ранкина — модели Tuuli), "Eyescapes" (фото гигантских зрачков), "Erotica", "Snog" (погружение в природу поцелуя), "Sofa So Sexy" (сатира на современных фотографов), "Cats" (сексуальные девушки-кошки), "Рortraits", "Fashion".

Vanishing America

The most touching exhibition on the vestiges of a lost way of life

Michael Eastman has made the ultimate roadtrip, crisscrossing the nation dozens of times to capture moviehouses, juke joints, barbershops, murals before they disappear.

An amazing overview of great everyday American architecture and design offering a provocative portrait of the silent emptiness that has descended upon struggling small communities everywhere.

"Michael Eastman has captured here the hardcore essence of blue-smoked architectural loneliness better than any other new artist I've encountered.

... Remnants of the past, Eastman seems to tell us, can still be recovered in the most unlikely of places."

Pertti Kekarainen: Density
Tila Series

Essays by Christoph Schreier and Jan-Erik Lundstrm.

This survey of Pertti Kekarainen's photography from 1996 to the present is organized by series, from Density to Tila. Kekarainen, a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki, is a key figure in the Helsinki School, and his goal is to represent invisible but persistent aspects of reality. He takes an unexpectedly old-fashioned direct route to a contemporary end, avoiding digital manipulation and using only mechanical capabilities of the camera to dot his images with colored spots like those you see after staring into a light. In the final image they appear as shadows and traces left not by the light but by the relationships of the people or objects near them, ghosts of ideas and conversations, akin to the ghosts in early spirit photography. Kekarainen has shown in Paris, Rome, Venice, Madrid and Tokyo, as well as all over Germany and northern Europe, where his work is widely held by museums.

In formal terms, Pertti Kekarainen's works are characterized by the multi-interpretative nature of space. He combines his photographs with local elements of colour that sometimes appear to conform to the space presented in the piece and are sometimes contrary to it. These features create tension and a slightly surreal atmosphere. The light in the photographs is beautiful and specific to these works. Here, Joubert's statement could be revered: "Without light there is no space".

In his latest body of work, naturalism08, he has deployed a baffling array of sharply lit convoluted forms set against deep black backgrounds, which at first glance could be read as organic specimens or digital constructions. Close examination reveals them to be reworked scans of crumpled newsprint & packaging - mediated, rather than generated, by computer.

Naturalism might be described as a cluster of literary and artistic conventions, which arose subsequently, and in response to Romanticism. Eschewing mythological or allegorical subject matter, Naturalism favoured a scientific attention to detail and the significance of the everyday. Photographic practice ably spans the Romantic/ Naturalistic divide, being equally able to establish facts and create fictions. The flat "unnatural" lighting, neutral backgrounds and fine detail of Fortescue's naturalism08 images evoke 19th century botanical illustrations or electron microscope studies of viruses. But at the same time the images work into the stylistic conventions of late 20th century science fiction cinema - the dark vacuum of interstellar space, and the suggestion of alien life forms. With Fortescue's introduced symmetry, the dot screen and rough texture of newsprint are transformed into an odd parody of observable nature.

Rectified Searches: Road, Chris, Fog:

…Chosen for obvious reasons, the keyword Chris arose from thinking about the Web as a kind of identity sink, a source of possible selves. The road is a familiar narrative genre, thanks to Baudelaire and Kerouac, representing an existential search for selfhood, self-realisation and transformation. The keyword fog was used after reading a comment Erwin Schroedinger made about the difference between an out of focus photograph and a photograph of fog. When juxtaposed together the three groups of images operate poetically to suggest a socially constructed subjectivity poised between the known and the unknown.

Lori Nix

My photos begin as highly detailed dioramas I construct from everyday items such as wood, plaster, and foam as well as scale model supplies. I build them with one eye towards reality and creating a believable landscape. Drawing on my surroundings for inspiration, I want to create a world that is familiar to the viewer, with recognize able details, that causes them to believe that it is a legitimate place. I want to fool the viewer, but only up to a point. I also want them to discover, in the course of looking at the photograph, that it is an imagined environment.

…The different series of work I’ve done have executed this illusion in different ways. My first series, Accidently Kansas, relies more on the idea of the tall tale, where each image seems to illustrate a story that begins, “You’ll never believe what I saw…” They maintain an I innocence and optimism, despite some unfortunate situations. Later series, “Some Other Place” and “Lost” illustrates a physical and societal disconnect from the world at large. “California Forest Fire” has a tiny trailer oblivious to the growing menace raging behind it. “The City” is the current body of work and imagines a potential future where nature has reclaimed the urban landscape. “Library” shows a highly esteemed institution where books are returning to their beginnings among the trees.

Mark Kimber

…In his earlier work SUN PICTURES (Stills Gallery, 2007) Kimber used a plastic 'Diana' camera to capture these scenes. The visual qualities that a rough plastic lens, two apertures (sunny and cloudy) and one shutter speed impart ably transformed objects and places into vignetted and illusionistic scenes.

Sun Pictures:

http://www.stillsgallery.com.au/artists ... main&nav=1

Kimber created his Sun Pictures with a 'Diana' camera, which is as basic as a Box Brownie. The simple technology of this camera lends a distinctive look to the images produced. They reflect the qualities of a rough plastic lens, a limited number of apertures (two only, sunny or cloudy, in fact) and one shutter speed. To achieve the best results follow the instructions for 'Kodak Light', which is taking photos with the sun over your shoulder.

In the spirit of American photographer Garry Winogrand the presence of the photographer is realised in Kimber's shadow, cast loomingly upon the subject matter. This device, not new to photography, remains a powerful reminder of the presence of the poetic in photographic vision.

EDGELAND, Mark Kimber's latest body of work, continues his fascination with the borders of suburbia; carparks, industrial buildings, shadows and signs…

Kimber is compelled to find "situations where the play of light, form and landscape converge in time and space to create an elusive and ephemeral piece of theatre." To produce EDGELAND he changed cameras, this time using a high definition model and shooting at dusk, the edge of the day. The intense colour of the twilight sky mixes with the artificial lights of the night.

Jörg Colberg:

Phillip Toledano's 'America — The Gift Shop'

There are many different ways to create political art. One possibility is to use a photo shoot to take unflattering images (to thus abuse your client-employer relationship, and to then add insult to injury by saying in public that your employer was stupid to hire you in the first place) and to then deface those images in a Photoshop hack job, essentially creating what amounts to the kind of "art" one typically finds on the walls of public bathrooms. Phillip Toledano knew he could do much better than that and decided to do an installation project, called America - The Gift Shop: "If American foreign policy had a gift shop, what would it sell?"…

I can see something you can't see
Julia Kissina
Bereznitsky Gallery
D. Berlin, 31 Oct-29 Nov 2008

Julia Kissina lets the uncanny swing like a grotesque pendulum from the humorous into homelike cosiness and back again: "I can see something you can't see." Particularly children are being metamorphosed, also by Hollywood directors working in the horror film genre, from their proverbial childlike innocence into small monsters. The genre is built upon suspense in which initially only slightly altered, irrational patterns of behaviour prepare the way for the protagonists' sudden decline, where the uncanny and paranormal have the upper hand. With these images Kissina, already known as a subtle story teller with or without her camera, describes dream and trance states; her artistic roots lie in surrealism and sweep into our contemporary world. Everything is mere parody — or is it not? Something slightly disquieting remains...

Bereznitsky Gallery
Kiew. Berlin

The Bereznitsky Gallery opened in 2006, and is located at 144 Linienstrasse. It is the first space in Berlin to represent contemporary Ukrainian art. The gallery presents the most exciting Ukrainian artists working today, making Eastern Europe’s lively yet neglected art scene accessible to a Western European audience for the first time. Through its regular exhibitions and events the gallery hopes to play a key role in facilitating a cultural meeting point between the contemporary art worlds of East and West. The director of the Gallery is the Ukrainian art historian and art critic Prof. Dr. Ludmila Bereznitsky, who also runs a gallery in Kiev.

Since its inception, the gallery has mounted an ambitious series of exhibitions presenting work by many leading international Ukrainian artists, such as Boris Mikhailov. The gallery shows key works from the generation of successful artists who together comprise what is often referred to as Ukrainian New Wave, including the much renowned Ilya Chichkan, and the painters Maxim Mamsikov, Vassily Tsagolov, as well as Aleksander Hnilitsky and Lesja Zajac, both of whom represented Ukraine at the 2007 Venice Biennale. Other exhibitions have presented cutting edge work from emerging talents such as Masha Shubina and the REVISION group, including the photographer Andrei Loginov. In 2007 the gallery participated in the 11th International Art Fair Moscow and ART.FAIR 21, Cologne.

Claudia Kunin, 3D-

She is now solely pursuing her fine art and has a number of bodies of accomplished work, including: "Revenant", "Ghost Stories" and "Holy Ghost Stories". Her new work is a complicated process of photographing models in the studio, background shoots and a considerable amount of work in Photoshop. These powerful archetypal images are virtually unique in contemporary art.

MICHAEL DAWSON GALLERY
Claudia Kunin: Ghost Stories

Michael Dawson Gallery is pleased to present a new series of mysterious, richly textured images by contemporary photographer Claudia Kunin. Digitally printed photographs on georgette and chiffon fabric hang one in front of the other, creating three-dimensional “ghosts” that emerge like luminous shadows from a fog. Using mid-nineteenth century daguerreotypes as source material, Kunin presents a body of narrative images that link the contemporary viewer with a fragmented, haunting past.

CLAUDIA KUNIN, 2001
at Michael Dawson Gallery, Hollywood
by Ray Zone

The pictorial photographs of Claudia Kunin seem to glow with light from another century. There is a great air of mystery in the way that Kunin's subjects are poised between light and shadow, as if captured in the passage between two eras, fixed on the threshold between night and day, youth and old age, innocence and experience. The images are sublimely simple, and their humanity is direct. These haunting photographs could well have been made a century ago and the subjects captured within them long since deceased.

Photographic inkjet print on fabric

Originally shot on Agfapan (100 ASA) on medium format (2 1/4" square) negative film and printed at 8" x 10" size, the black and white photos are actually rendered as a rich sepia tone. The printing on the polyester was produced through digital inkjet printing which gives the imagery an even greater warmth with the dispersion of the four printing colors (CMYK) used in the process.

Some of the photos are part of a series of images that Kunin created for a photo illustrated edition of the classic Stephen Crane novel The Red Badge of Courage…

Claudia Kunin: Revenant

rev•e•nant n. a person who returns, as after a long absence

This collection of work by Claudia Kunin calls to mind ghosts from another era. Life size silken shadows are caught on a transparent medium in a synthesis of 21st century technology with what appear to be 19th century images. As a paean to preservation, the photographs are also available in a limited edition of gum-over-platinum prints. Come explore this mysterious paradox of being both in the present and the past.

Rain / Hope / Grief / Fall
Erwin Olaf
Fotomuseum Den Haag
NL. Den Haag, 27 Sep-18 Jan 2009

Erwin Olaf, Grief — Grace (Portrait), 2007, lambda print.

Erwin Olaf, Fall — Joschka, 2008, lambda print.

With their averted eyes half open, staring into nothingness, the models in the photographs in Erwin Olaf's latest series, Fall, evoke a strange kind of aloofness. The portraits are interspersed with still lifes of plants and flowers in simple ceramic vases. With its use of colour, the strange, almost awkward expressions on the faces of the models and the almost unreal setting, the series Fall is in some ways the logical successor to the earlier series Grief, Hope and Rain. This autumn, all four will be on display together for the first time in a retrospective at The Hague Museum of Photography.

Though the adolescents in the photographs in Fall (2008) have the stylised perfection so characteristic of Olaf's work, they are not perfect examples of our current ideal of beauty. Their curious expressions are determined to a large extent by the fact that the images were taken as they were blinking. This makes it unclear what the models are actually feeling, what their real emotions are. The combination with still lifes of flowers and the title of the series highlight what may very well be the key theme of Fall - the transient nature of beauty. The exhibition in The Hague Museum of Photography will be the series world premiere.

While Erwin Olaf was previously known for his hedonistic photographs of extravagant partygoers or people as actors in flamboyant baroque settings, nowadays the common themes in his work are serenity and fragility, as the four series in the exhibition clearly show. His palette is reminiscent of the 1950s, as is the environment in which the people - and plants - are pictured.

The images in Fall (2007) raise all kinds of questions…
