Pentimento are a series of objects in book form incorporating mixed media and are specifically photograph(y) dependent. Pentimento represents a personal re-examination of life/history through the filter of what I know now. Formally, I seek to contextualize found/fabricated objects and selected photographs into a juxtaposition that illuminates lived experience and personal truth. Pentimento is evidence of change, of historical revision and reflection on the connection to what has already been and an ever-evolving present.

Verso Limited Editions has released a limited edition hand-bound photography collection of iconic images by four visionary photographers who influenced the course of modern photographic history – Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David “Chim” Seymour. This collector’s book celebrates the 60th anniversary of Magnum Photos, a photographic co-operative founded by these four men. An introduction with biographies of each of the photographers is included in this exhibition.

A special honor was created this year for a remarkable and unique submission to POYi. The judges and director conferred the first "Distinguished Leadership in Photojournalism Award" in recognition of "Magnum Founders: In Celebration of 60 Years" and the member photographers who have guided the development of photojournalism since the founding of Magnum. The distinction honors the publishing house of Verso Limited Editions, the photo agency of Magnum Photos, and the preeminent photojournalists Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, and David Seymour.

The Platinum Prints
All images in Magnum Founders are hand printed in platinum by Stan Klimek on Fabriano Artistico, a traditional 100% cotton watercolor paper. Each print is then individually stamped by the photographer’s estate. The collection includes twelve bound prints (three from each photographer) and one free-standing 14" x 16" print by Robert Capa which is numbered and suitable for framing. Books purchased during the pre-publication period will also include a fourteenth print (free-standing) by George Rodger. The Cartier-Bresson prints in Magnum Founders are the only estate-stamped prints issued since his death in 2004.

The Text and Binding
The text of Magnum Founders is composed in Walbaum and Helvetica Neue by the Press & Letterfoundry of Michael & Winifred Bixler. It is printed on 100% cotton Hahnemühle Photo Rag by Michael Russem at Kat Ran Press. Each book is hand-bound in quarter-leather by Mark Tomlinson featuring distinctive red Japanese crepe endsheets, red leather endbands and a unique cover construction of black and red laminated paper boards.

Designed by Skolkin + Chickey, the collection is encased in an English buckram clamshell and presented in a custom-crafted walnut box suitable for display.

Marian Drew was born in Australia in 1960 and studied visual art at Canberra School of Art from 1980 -1984. Drew studied in Germany, Experimental Photography, Kassel University, post graduate studies 1984-1985 and has been Senior Lecturer, Photography Art Practice , at the Queensland College of Art from 1986 to current.

From 1983 to 2007 Marian Drew has held twenty one solo exhibitions in Australia, the United States, France and Germany.

Artist Statement "Every living Thing"
"In 2002, I travelled to Germany, where I studied the still life paintings in museums and in particular an extensive collection at Wilhelmshoehe, in the city of Kassel. On my return home these ideas united with the imagery of the animals I saw killed on roads in Australia. in the course of daily life these native animals are killed by cars, domestic pets or power lines and are easily found scattered beside the roads through our urban environments.

This new perspective made me question our existing relationship to wild animals, the wealthy landowners in Renaissance Europe believed that the abundance of nature was there for human consumption. I found correlations to these ideas whithin the local attitudes to wildlife that are killed in the drive for urban expansion and economic growth.

By imitating the historic painted forms of the 'Still Life', but replacing paint with photographic verisimilitude, and familiar European animals with Australian native species, a discord is exposed.

This work aims to overlay the historical and the present, the European with the antipodean and photography with painting, while exploring contemporary notions of death and a changing relationship to animals."

George Steeves, Splanzani, 1990
silver print, MCPC's collection

The Centre international d'art contemporain de Montréal presents, from January 15 through March 15, 1998, the exhibition George Steeves : 1979-1993. The exhibition draws on the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography's extensive collection of nearly one hundred works representing six series.

Throughout his career, Steeves has worked with escalating intensity and unsparing self-incrimination. Deeply interested in the power of photography to express the most personal of emotions, he has mined the people and places around him, documenting their secrets, scandals and dilemmas. Layered on their volunteered confessions are his own as partner, instigator and voyeur.

George Steeves: 1979-1993 includes extended portraits of performance artist Ellen Pierce, dancers Angela and Duncan Holt, and writer Astrid Brunner - portraits done at the request of the subjects, involving a long-term collaboration with the photographer. It also includes personal explorations of Steeves himself, through self-portraits and photographs of the people and places around him …

We Can’t Paint Blog:

Last week I found out that I received a nice little package in the mail from Canadian photographer George Steeves, a response to my post on anonymous artists in Canada. Not only did this bundle include a letter from Steeves (a nice break from the usual e-mail I always receive; I’m sending one George!) and a huge amount of info surrounding his distinguished practice, but Steeves was kind enough to send me a signed catalog from his 2007 solo show at MSVU Gallery, excerpts from his monumental series Excavations.

Exposure Online Magazine™ - Photographer: George Steeves

Изображение

One of Canada's great photographers, George Steeves has the anonymity in his native country that afflicts many of the Great White North's best artists. Unless you are an aficionado of contemporary Canadian photography you will have probably never heard of the man. But once you are introduced to his work (especially his more erotic and intimate series of works starting with Ellen Pierce in 1981) you will be irreversibly changed.

Born in Moncton, New Brunswick in 1943, Steeves has made Halifax his home since 1973. A self taught artist, he began his education with an 8 X 10 view camera back in the early 70s focusing on landscape photography. He worked at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography after receiving his engineering degree at various post secondary institutions including Carleton University in Ottawa. He retired in 2006.

A meeting with performance artist Ellen Pierce at the MSVU Art Gallery in 1981 made Steeves change his focus from the outdoors to the expressionism of the human body. Called Pictures of Ellen it is one of Steeves most recognizable series of shots. Since the Pierce shots, Steeves has gone on to work with Astrid Brunner, Lianne Heller and Tim Dunn among others.

Because George Steeves creates long term relationships with his subjects (spending more time away from the camera creating lasting and close relationships) his photographs are best described as very intimate and vulnerable. None of his subjects can be considered model-like, and Steeves doesn't try to hide any physical flaws (if you can call the marks on your body from living and aging a flaw) so his pictures can also be difficult to view. Uncomfortable and perhaps voyeuristic, vulnerable, grotesque, sexually explicit, erotic, graphic and beautiful are a few of the adjectives attributed to his work…

George Steeves

…Probably because of the often erotic nature of his pictures, he has worked largely in obscurity within his own community. A 1989 exhibit at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design was publicly opposed and posters were removed. After the show ended, his works were damaged when they were removed from the walls.[3] A 1993 exhibition at the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography in Ottawa was more successful. His work has also been shown at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark and the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts in Montreal. A thirty-year retrospective exhibition was mounted at Mount Saint Vincent University Art Gallery in 2007. His works are included in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada and Mount Saint Vincent University.

On Thursday, May 15, Swann Auction Galleries will conduct their annual spring sale of Photographic Literature & Photographs. This large, two-part auction features many rare and sought-after photo books, and select works by important 20th-century photographers.

The Photographic Literature section is extraordinary and features items from the Library of David Raymond, whose Surrealist photographs were recently acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Among the books from this collection are Hans Bellmer's Les Jeux de la Poupée, with 15 hand-colored silver prints and two small hand-colored cut-outs illustrating the artist's well-known eroticized doll, one of 142 numbered and signed copies, Paris, 1949 (estimate: $75,000 to $100,000); Claude Cahun's Aveux non Avenus, with 10 reproductions of photo-collages by Cahun and Marcel Moore, one of 500 numbered copies, Paris, 1930 ($6,000 to $7,000); and George Hugnet's La Septième Face du Dé, Poèmes-Découpages, with reproductions of 20 photo-collages, several in color, inscribed twice by Hugnet, and accompanied by two prospectuses announcing the sale of the book, Paris, 1936 ($10,000 to $15,000).

Among the rarest and most coveted examples of photographic literature are issues of Alfred Stieglitz's influential publication Camera Work. This auction offers two issues of the magazine that showcase the work of Paul Strand: Number 48, with six of Strand's Modernist images of New York, 1916 ($12,000 to $18,000); and Number 49/50, the rare final issue, with 11 photogravures by Strand, in a boards box that displays Strand's and Stieglitz's handwritten notations, New York, 1917 ($15,000 to $25,000). These publications were once in the collection of Milton Brown, an art historian and friend of Strand's.

IN AND AROUND THE HOUSE
Laurie Simmons
Carolina Nitsch Project Room
New York, 17 May-28 Jun 2008

Carolina Nitsch is pleased to present IN AND AROUND THE HOUSE, the first comprehensive survey of Laurie Simmons' early black and white photographs from 1976-78 at her Project Room in Chelsea, New York.

This seminal body of work put Simmons at the forefront of a new generation of artists, predominantly women, whose photographic works began a new dialogue in contemporary art.

Laurie Simmons, Woman's Head,
from IN AND AROUND THE HOUSE, the complete early b/w photographs, 1976-78

…Simmons, while sharing strategies with the artists known as the Pictures Generation - Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince, Louise Lawler and Sarah Charlesworth - and their documentation and appropriation of cultural memory, forged her own identity more closely aligned with surrealism and artists such as Man Ray, Rodchenko, Bellmer and Gordon Matta Clark's mysterious black and white photograph collages that documented his 1970's "building cuts".

Laurie Simmons, Dollhouse Window
from IN AND AROUND THE HOUSE, the complete early b/w photographs, 1976-78

Simmons' use and manipulation of dolls and interiors, marked by intentional dislocations and unexpected conjunctions, created a nonlinear narrative and abstract pictorial plane that echoes the skewed images of personal memory and dreams. Her subjects, which swell with a faux-tone of a simple, safe and secure home life, feel as relevant today as when Simmons first shot them.

Laurie Simmons has exhibited widely in the United States and Europe. She has had more than a dozen solo exhibitions in New York City…

Šioje žinomo Vilniaus fotografo Jano Bułhako (1876-1950) knygoje publikuojami du literatūriniai kūriniai: atsiminimai Vaikystės metų kraštas ir aštuoniolikos novelių rinkinys Namai. Atsiminimai apima 1882–1886 metus, praleistus gimtajame Ostašino dvare.

New York Photo Festival: "2.0" (aka Nothing wrong with 1.0 really)

Изображение

It's really just a coincidence that the man in this photo is holding his head while walking through Tim Barber's "Various Photographs". I could not have staged it any better, though. I think "Various Photographs" might be the worst photography show I have ever seen; and from what various photographer friends told me, there are lots of people who share this sentiment…

It completely escapes me how slapping together photography by 160 photographers (!) can be called "curating", even though I might be missing something, because, after all, we are being told it's "curating 2.0". But then, the "2.0" reminds me of what people were talking about in the not-so-distant past, when the internet bubble was taken as a sign of a "new economy", where the old rules of how to make money were not supposed to be valid any longer…

We Can’t Paint Blog:

I’ve been following Yvonne Todd’s work for a long time now and all of it is great. This New Zealand artist references fashion, product and commercial photography, all of which has a sinister undertone . The images themselves are always super clean, most utilize very effective Photoshop aesthetics to make interesting and beautiful photographs.
