The stock photography and video giant Getty Images is up for sale and could be bought by private equity firms for as much as $1.5bn (£769m), according to reports.

Final bids could be received by the end of the month, with Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Bain Capital said to be be in the running, according to today's New York Times.

A sale is not definite, because uncertainty in the world's financial markets means it may be hard for a potential buyer to secure funding.

However, potential bidders will have been watching closely as Getty's share price fell from a peak of $93.66 (£43.04) in Dec 2005 to $21.94 (£11.25) at Friday's close.

Getty's revenues reached $209m (£107m) for the third quarter of 2007, with net income $25.7m (£13.2m). The company predicts that revenues for the whole of 2008 will reach $900m (£462m).

Getty Images dominates the stock photography market and has been aggressively acquiring rivals both on and offline.

The company paid $202m (£103m) to acquire MediaVast last year, $51m (£26m) for Photonica in 2005 and $50m (£26m) for iStockPhoto.com in 2006.

Acknowledging the trend for user-generated content, Getty bought Scoopt, a UK citizen journalism agency, in March last year for an undisclosed sum.

Getty has also moved into audio rights, paying $42.5m (£21.8m) for music licensing company Pump Audio in June.

ну это мы уже знаем =)
и к тому же это довольно закрытое агенство, и белорусов я знаю пару человек кто с ни работает, не креативщиков. так что не вижу ничего странного, ненадо паники =) кому нужен был эксклюзив тот будет брать и за 100 =) просто доходы у них упали, по известным причинам, вот и продают.

Rebekka Guðleifsdóttir recently found out that some of her photographs were earning money for another person. According to CNet news, several of her images had been copied from Flikr and uploaded to iStockphoto without her permission. Once Getty Images (who owns iStockphoto) was informed they removed the stolen images and are working with Ms. Guðleifsdóttir to make appropriate remedies.

Theft of digital images has reached epic proportions across the globe. Between random individuals stealing images for personal use, others reselling images (like Ms. Guðleifsdóttir was a victim of), and companies using images they haven't paid for, its hard for a photographer to not loose money. It has even reached the point where "news" agencies run by photographers have snatched images for their pages to illustrate stories under the guise of "sending traffic to the originating site."

What makes this theft so rampant is the difficulty photographers have in tracking their work. Often the photographer doesn't know his/her work has been stolen. There are a few new services, like PicScout ImageTracker that will search the web on behalf of photographers but most photographers still rely on many hours of manual image searches through popular search engines.

For now, the best solution seems to be prevention. Photographers should always watermark their images and upload low resolution/small size images to lessen their attractiveness to thieves. Images under 800 pixels on the long side at 72pixels per inch is the current preferred maximum image size of many photographers seeking to prevent image theft.

ХЕ ХЕ =))
немогу сдержаться, открыли глаза, зайдите в любое издание и у вас волосы станут дыбом, так что по мелочи можно небеспокоить. у Нашего человека культура другая, да и вероятносьт попасться за это нереально мала, Психологию не переделать.


Да Getty Images так и не продали =))
видно много запросили, посмотрим как этот год протянет, но пологаю что золотое время кончилось =)

нужны более действенные методы и средства по защите, то что предлогается это потеря времени и времени =)

А вот и нет, все белорусы как раз отличаются врожденным английским.

Просто про это не все знают, в отличие от таких же присущих от рождения совершенных знаний в области дизайна и фотографии, очем как раз осведомлены почти все… Не знают только некоторые — идут учиться!

Да и девушки рулят, так что правы, видимо, те, что домохозяйки таки убьют коммерческую фотографию. Так что есть надежда, что славные времна для творчества — еще впереди.

скорее Домохозяйки зделают эту творческую фотографию комерческой чем наши фотохудожники начнут зарабатывать на том что делают всю жизнь, и это не смешно =))
