Reader feedback,

Krappy Kamera Competition 2007

Photo Book Review

Satellites
Jonas Bendiksen

This remarkable book delivers a personal eye-witness account (with incredible color photos and poingant text) of several of the outlying areas of the former Soviet Union. Bendiksen's insightful and often sadly humorous text refers to them as "half-forgotten enclaves and restless territories." And the breadth of photographs, taken over 7 years of exploration, drive that message home.

News Photographer Magazine

http://www.nppa.org/news_and_events/magazine/

The April 2007 issue of News Photographer magazine features a roundup of the top winners in NPPA's Best Of Photojournalism 2007 competition as the judging concluded at the end of March. Also in this issue is a feature story on photojournalist James Whitlow Delano, an American-born Tokyo-based photographer who sees the world through one - and only one - lens, the 35mm f2 that's always on his Leica M-2. In addition, combat photojournalist USAF Staff Sgt. Stacy L. Pearsall writes about what it's like to survive an ambush in Iraq armed with a camera, a gun, and a medical kit, and Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Jerry Gay tells about helping kids at a Seattle cancer center's school learn how to use disposable cameras to discover and express their own views of the world.

The International Magazine of Photography Books — the only magazine devoted to photography books!

"With the number of important photography books increasing every year, a selective, intelligent, and lively guide to the best of those titles has never been so essential. The photo-eye Booklist fills that bill quite nicely.
Without it, I’d be lost." —Vince Aletti

"The photo-eye Booklist is an indispensable source to identify current publications in photography. Even more important, in terms of discrimination and selection, are the insightful comments on new titles."
—Peter C. Bunnell, McAlpin Professor Emeritus, Princeton University

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

A photobook is an autonomous art form, comparable with a piece of sculpture, a play or a film. The photographs lose their own photographic character as things “in themselves” and become parts, translated into printing ink, of a dramatic event called a book. —Dutch photography critic Ralph Prins

For the past five years, this magazine has been a celebration of the “dramatic event called a book.” The landscape of photobook publishing has changed and expanded rapidly over the course of the last fifteen years, with exciting new publishing companies cropping up around the globe. It has been a joy to survey that landscape and to provide you—our readers and avid collectors—with commissioned reviews and interviews by photographers and wri ters on some of the best titles out there…

The Early Issues:

http://www.jpgmag.com/issues/1

In January of 2005, Derek Powazek and Heather Powazek Champ ignited a spark. They saw an opportunity in the quality of images on photo sharing sites like flickr.com; they saw unrecognized capability and unrecognized captures. Through their own talent and that of the online photography community, Derek and Heather put together JPG Issues 1 through 6, a beautiful collection of photographs, articles, and interviews. Some of the highlights that captured the spirit of JPG: the Issue 2: Lost interview with a woman fighting breast cancer and documenting her journey, the Issue 5: Photography is Not a Crime cut-out guide to photographers' legal rights, the Issue 6: Oops how-to article on tossing your camera to get kaleidoscopic images. Printing of the 6" x 9" paperbacks was arranged through a print-on-demand website so that Derek and Heather could put this collection together on their own, as a labor of love, with the community contributing an enormous pool of great images.

JPG has come a long way since its beginnings. JPG is now printed by 8020 Publishing six-times each year as a full-sized magazine delivered to subscribers and newsstands around the world. Over a million community votes were cast on 10,000 photos and stories submitted to the last issue. But the creative energy, the talented community, the passion for showcasing excellent work: all of these elements originated in the Early Issues and continue on today. From Issue 1: Origin to Issue 6: Oops, this collection embodies the spirit of the fun in photography: the moment, the capture, the creativity, the experiment, the accident. The Early Issues served as the inspiration for the magazine and community that would follow, and we hope you enjoy them.

The magazine is 390 pages, 6 inches wide, 9 inches tall, perfect-bound, 20-pound white interior paper, full-color CMYK interior ink, 100-pound white exterior paper, full-color CMYK exterior, and contains zero ads.

Light Painting

By Michael Walton. 22 November 2007

A small collection of light painted photographs

I recently came across the technique of light painting, it intrigued me and I just had to try it, there is no photoshop used on any of these photos at all, it is all done through the camera, light painting is the most fun ever, all photographs are taken in the middle of the night, the locations were pitch black.
