NEW YORK PHOTO FESTIVAL 2009 (May 14th-24th 2009)
The Second Annual International Photography Festival in New York City

…The inaugural New York Photo Festival (May 14–May 18, 2008) delivered a dynamic, high-quality event in what is arguably the photographic capital of the world. This event celebrated both contemporary photography and the creative, inspirational talents of the people who produce this work. The New York Photo Festival 2008 took place in DUMBO, an off-the-beaten-track, but easily accessible neighborhood on the Brooklyn waterfront between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.

The second annual New York Photo Festival is schedule to take place in DUMBO, next May 14-24, 2009.

World-Renowned Curators (NYPH 2009)
The goal of the New York Photo Festival is to document the future of photography in all its forms. Our group of internationally-respected curators will deliver their personal vision of the newest and most important trends in contemporary photography, each exhibited in their own pavilion and promising to draw the attention of the entire photographic community.

Festival Curators for NYPH 2009 include photo editor Jody Quon (New York Magazine), book publisher Chris Boot, Bill Ewing, Director of the The Musée de l'Elysée, and Neville Wakefield, art critic, author and independent curator.

International attendance
…The four primary international photography festivals in Europe and Canada each draw between 100,000 and 1,000,000 people per year. Our ambition is to attract a comparable audience to the second annual NYPH festival in 2009, and to increase substantially in subsequent years as the scope and real estate available for the festival grows.

Conscientious — Jörg Colberg's weblog about fine-art photography:

'Proles vs. Pros: An Experiment In Curating'

Here's an article about a photo show "curated" "by 3,344 self-selected people". I think the experiment is interesting enough, but the underlying ideas — summarized in "The Wisdom of Crowds" by James Surowiecki — are a nice and inspiring read, but little more. It's not very hard to see how the theory has tons of gaping holes (if the crowd was really so wise how come that George W. Bush was re-elected president in 2004 when it was already painfully obvious how incompetent he is? if the crowd is so wise how is it possible for stock- (or property-) market bubbles to develop? etc. etc.).

Proles vs. Pros: An Experiment In Curating

By Robin Givhan
Sunday, July 6, 2008

A bunch of self-described know-nothings, aficionados and anonymous experts curated a new photography exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. The museum's goal was not to debate the merits of Walker Evans vs. Edward Weston or haggle over such details as lighting and wall placement. It was to decide if a horde of disconnected individuals could make reasonable judgments on art.

"Click! A Crowd-Curated Exhibition" was inspired by the 2005 book "The Wisdom of Crowds" by James Surowiecki. In it he argues that crowds in all their lowbrow, rumpled unruliness are wiser than an elite few…

Light Work : Current Exhibition

BLAKE FITCH
Expectations of Adolescence

April 1 – July 18, 2008

Life comes at us at a maddening pace. Seasons come and go. We grow up, mature, and soon notice next generations pushing up from behind us. We too were the youngest once, and remember those days fondly as we help the next generation through their struggles of adolescence. This is the cycle of life, but most of us would prefer slowing down the changes within and around us.

Blake Fitch alters that pace by allowing us a look at the gradual transition of two girls into young women…

Inspiration From Cannes 2007: Blake Fitch

Photographer Blake Fitch has created a stunning photo essay titled, Expectations of Adolescence that follows two pre-teen girls into adulthood. Besides the fact that Blake has a fantastic eye, can’t you just see this type of sequential imagery for a print ad or even broadcast for a women’s brand? Say, tampons or face cream. Yeah, yeah face cream. All you ladies know that you use a totally different type of face cream when you are 16 (anti-pizza face) versus when you’re twenty-eight (anti-wrinkle). The tag would be something like, “Nivea, Yours For Life.” You see? See? That idea is a freebie, by the way. Anyway, look Blake up. We’re guessing that she’s got talent and ideas for eons.

Expectations of Adolescence
photographs by
Blake Fitch

…Adolescence can be a time of magic, imagining all of the possibilities, and a time of unfettered dreams. It can also be a time riddled with doubt, controlled or tainted by the constraints of peer groups, family and society. High-reaching ideals can lift expectations to see limitless possibilities. At the same time, constraints of the times and “reality” can force dreams into nightmarish times of self-doubt.

Here we see, compressed, thanks to photography, and a good eye behind the lens: innocence, ease, confusion, resistance, defiance, differentiation. “This is not who I am, really, don’t you know?”

…Most importantly to Fitch, the girls themselves – and her wider family – appreciate the images, both as family documents and works of art. At the opening of her show at Light Work, family members clustered around the images, sharing their memories of when the images were shot and revealing stories behind them. As for the girls, "they're quite excited about them," Fitch says. "I'm hoping they'll look back at these images at some point in their lives and be really proud to have this chronicle of themselves growing up."

Fly into Düsseldorf to control the printing of an exhibition I'm having at Phillips de Pury Gallery in London this summer. Grieger is the only lab in Europe that specialises in large-format printing. You walk in and you see the work of Andreas Gursky and all the other German artists that I adore. I had to stand on top of a ladder to see them because they are so big; it's impossible to hold them up.

The exhibition includes pictures from all aspects of my career (left). But I try to keep the royal clients out of it. When I did the Diana exhibition I asked her kids, Prince William and Prince Harry, to come see it before it opened. I've been very careful with those pictures…

June 1

Off to Berlin for the launch of an issue of German Vogue. I was asked to edit a whole issue, and photographed it all myself. The only thing they imposed on me was a theme: sex. That was not an unknown subject for me. My all-time inspiration is Helmut Newton, a German, who happened to be born a day after me – though not the same year. We are both Scorpios and people often say to me, "Scorpios are very sexual"…

New Photography 2008
Josephine Meckseper and Mikhael Subotzky

September 10, 2008–January 5, 2009

New Photography is the annual fall showcase of significant recent work in photography. This year's exhibition features the work of Josephine Meckseper (German, b. 1964) and Mikhael Subotzky (South African, b. 1981).

In her photographs and signature vitrine displays, Meckseper explores the media's strategy of mixing political news and advertising content. Her installation includes a selection of larger-than-life-size photographs of models dressed in vintage lingerie from the 1950s, from her 2006 Blow-Up series. Also included is Quelle International (2008), a new group of pictures culled from a mail order catalogue popular in Germany in the 1970s that have been printed on reflective Mylar. In both series the artist uses the semantic codes of advertising to address issues of power and consumerism.

The Josephine Meckseper Catalogue

…Published on the occasion of her 2004 exhibition IG-Metall und die kunstlichen Paradiese des Politischen (IG Metall and the Artificial Paradises of Politics) at Galerie Reinhard Hauff in Stuttgart, The Josephine Meckseper Catalogue presents images and artifacts from Meckseper's critical art practice in the guise of a glossy fashion magazine. Her use of this format speaks directly to one of the central themes of her work: the convergence of fashion, politics and capitalism.

Thanks to Speak, See, Remember for this very strange and interesting find. PhotoQuotes.com is a site, of you guessed it, quotes of well-known (and obscure) photogs. What is perhaps most compelling is that someone embarked on this rather monumental task of compiling, categorizing and posting these tidbit’s. Some profound, some illuminating and some just plain boring. I have cherry-picked some that I thought were worth a read…

The most difficult thing for me is a portrait. You have to try and put your camera between the skin of a person and his shirt.

From the Mouths of Models

We rarely look at the images of lithe, beautiful women in magazines and imagine what they are thinking. If we do try to imagine what they are thinking, my guess is we don’t exactly fill their heads with very deep commentary on the world or their own situations. But is this not like any other assumption about people, because a woman is beautiful does not make her empty headed, materialistic, or silly. I had the pleasure of meeting a very successful model last summer, and she is one of the most sensitive, emotionally intelligent and intellectually curious people I know.

So when I came across this post on the gossip blog, Jezebel, I was very excited to see a model opening up about her experiences. The post is entitled “Whenever I Feel Like Starving Myself, I Just Look At ‘One Cup Of Oatmeal.doc.’” It is a short chronicle of her first runway season in Paris, and how she dieted and exercised in excess while there…

This is (Still) the Golden Age

Matthew Gamber’s show of dreamy photograms “This is (still) The Golden Age” at Gallery Kayafas is a trip down memory lane “TV Land”-style. Gamber, editor-in-chief of Boston's Big Red & Shiny and a professor at Savannah College of Art, exposed photographic paper by pressing it against a television screen, capturing sweet blurry black-and-white images of scenes from “Leave It to Beaver”…

…They look like memories as seen with a strum of a harp in soft-focus movie flashbacks. Or TV with your glasses off.

The press release says Gamber “is dealing with recollection and memory, cultural history, and sentimentality.” They don’t get me thinking much about such things, though, because Gamber does little to transform or comment on the images he appropriates. Instead these seem to be about simply reveling in nostalgia and pop culture kitsch – but too high arty to really have fun.

My favorite images here aren’t part of the TV rerun lineup…

Philippe Gronon

Safe No. 1
Silver Gelatin Print
1991

This exhibition consists of Philippe Gronon's gelatin silver prints of wall safes, library card catalogues and elevator doors. Through strict observation, Gronon captures meticulous details with a studio camera and enlarges each print to the exact scale of the object, presenting it unframed and devoid of context. A card catalogue from the Vatican Library, for example, is photographed in its original surroundings and then re-presented on a gallery wall, shifting perception of the object according to the setting.

While extremely detailed, the images are conceptual in their abstraction of commonplace and outmoded objects. Presenting his photographs in this dual manner, Gronon anchors each object in time by preserving visual traces of use, and yet strips them of their original functions so that a plurality of meanings may come to mind. Focusing on banal objects that are representative of a common past, Gronon's work considers icons of a collective memory.

Philippe Gronon has exhibited widely in Europe…

«Noah Kalina. Everyday.

В 189 номере журнала Aperture (зима 2007) есть интересная статья Фреда Ритчина “We are all Photographers Now,”, где поднимаются вопросы о роли фотокураторов и музеев сегодня.

Why do we need a museum when a young photographer like Noah Kalina (…) can make daily self-portraits over more than six years of an ordinary existence, accompany the images with a girlfriend’s piano sound track, spend four hours with some video-editing software, and, without any curatorial experience, upload his short presentation to YouTube – where he has attracted more than six millions viewers? How many viewers would see his work in a museum? And what is the added value in watching Kalina’s presentation on a screen in a museum rather than on one’s own computer?».

http://istota-rzeczy.livejournal.com/156595.html

Ken Johnson presents an excellent review of this exhibit in today's New York Times. This is a show of 78 photographs that were selected (voted) from a total submission pool of 389 images representing the theme Changing Faces of Brooklyn. 3,344 people voted online and the top picks are in the show. Reminds me of JPG Magazine, and in fact, JPG founder Derek Powazek was a consultant to the show.

This type of Curatus Populatus raises all types of questions and issues, and probably tends to get under the skin of art experts and professional curators. Do the three thousand-plus voters really have the ability to select the best art among the group of submissions? Johnson likens it to a jelly bean counting contest, in which only a few guesses per hundred will be close to the correct amount, but the average of all guesses will be very accurate.

I think this represents an interesting and welcome trend in art exhibits. We still need, and will always (i hope) have, museum and gallery shows curated by experts. But the internets has also given us the ability to allow exhibits based on the choices and correct guesses of large numbers of people. JPG Magazine manages to present a high level of art photography, and it's images are mostly based on the votes of it's readers.

Susan Sontag, wrote in her book Regarding the Pain of Others (2003)...

Photography is the only major art in which professional training and years of experience do not confer an insuperable advantage over the untrained and inexperienced...

She was referring to photographers. And the truth of those words is evident on the pages of JPG Magazine, the multiple millions of art worthy images on such sites as Flickr, and recent success of We Are All Photographers Now, exhibited at Switzerland's Musee de l'Elysee.

Emerging from this trend is the new concept to be reckoned with.... We Are All Curators Now

Philippe Gronon,

ArtSlant — File under Philippe Gronon

Philippe Gronon’s exhibition at Yossi Milo Gallery, comprised of highly rendered photographs of safes, elevators, and card catalogues, is a room of doors waiting to be opened. One’s fingers itch to spin the combination locks and tug the handles. Behind the wall, ropes would pulley and cylinders would tumble and then cavities would appear, holding passengers, jewels and cash, unfamiliar air.

The setup is deceptively simple—there are five photographs of safes hung in a row on the east wall of the gallery; across from them, three photographs of card catalogues, and on the north and south walls, single photographs of elevator doors. All are silver gelatin prints scaled to the actual size of the objects they depict. Whether or not Gronon’s aim is to create an illusion or simply represent the objects with absolute accuracy, there is a definite photography-as-sculpture aspect to his work. All of the photographs are printed full bleed and most of them are hung unframed, effectively repositioning them as 3D objects (one photograph, Safe (1991), has even been trimmed flush with the curved edges of the lockbox itself. Ceci n'est pas une pipe !). There is a great amount of detail; shooting with a studio camera, Gronon captures the cold texture of steel and the softness of worn wood, and chips and scratches in metal surfaces are indistinguishable from imperfections in the emulsion. The only thing working against a complete mirage is the lack of color.

The strongest piece in the exhibition—Gronon’s first in the US—is Elevator, Lyceum Kennedy, New York (2005). Standing in front of this life-sized photograph puts the viewer in the funny position of waiting for an elevator that will never arrive. There is a humid handprint the shiny door, and a smudged window just above eye level acts as a portal to another layer altogether. This piece especially evokes the vertiginous quality of a movie set—buildings and trees and fire hydrants that turn out to be flat when you peek behind them. Gronon’s show manages to possess both the dispassionate principles of New Objectivity and the whimsy of Alice In Wonderland, and for that reason alone it’s worth seeing.

First Annual PhotoVision Award

Photographers from here in Seattle and across the nation have been extremely generous in showing their support for Photographic Center Northwest through the donation of works to be auctioned off when we gather on October 6 for the inagural PhotoVision Award dinner and auction. We are very excited by the extraordinary quality of photographs submitted, and know that you will be too.

We invite you to take a look at some of our participating photographers below. If you have questions about specific works in advance of the auction, feel free to email us…

Arthur S. Aubry

… an exhibition of contemporary color photographs by Arthur S. Aubry.
Photographing in and around the Pacific Northwest, Arthur S. Aubry's color photographs are both expressions of abstraction and documents of a transformed reality. Aubry combines the modernist tradition of geometric abstraction with a sense of 19th century exploration, engaging in the discovery of hidden subjects.

This exhibition highlights recent work that are tight abstract compositions omitting a horizon and forming strong and stark abstract compositions. They challenge our perception of scale and our ability to identify something that exists. While these subjects may have come to a grinding halt long ago, Aubry's photographs suggest a new life for these objects.

Aubry urges us to look closer and to seek out the beauty that lies obscured all around us. Under his diligent eye this hidden world is revealed to us in such vivid detail that the old machinery appears almost palpable. Aubry's sense of composition allows us to make sense of the often confusing clutter of cast aside waste, organizing things dissimilar in their prior use into a comprehensible language of color and form. In many of these images we get both a sense of what once was, and what now is. Aubry gives us pause to contemplate the transformation and feel the emotional resonance of the abstraction.

http://forum.znyata.com/viewtopic.php?t=5547

Last but not least: не успел вовремя приехать, чтобы помочь со сканами негативов Маши Харченко. Алексей и Катя, к счастью, начали сами… Спасибо Николаю, что уберег сканер: возможно, удастся сделать выставку и книгу фотографий Маши.

(То, что не иду на концерт Бьорк, само собой разумеется…)
