His recent imagery is based on American aristocracy in the early 1960s. It blends journalistic details with staged emotions. In Grief, Olaf's latest series currently on show, solitary figures brood in tearful silence, capturing that precise moment when innocence, hope and joy were all lost. Nothing is as it seems and in Erwin's recreated world, nothing is real." "Grief is a series about the choreography of emotion, and what you can create in the studio," says Erwin Olaf. На заметку в Popular Photography: Art: A Fashion History A brief and entirely subjective history of fashion imagery. By Jean-Jaques Naudet September 8, 2008 When the first illustrated fashion magazines emerged in the 1890s, the ideals of fashion rested squarely with an aristocracy of style. In a large sense, the beginning of fashion photography and its profound cultural impact can be traced back to the 1920s, when a pioneering fashion photographer, Baron Adolphe de Meyer, began using society beauties and famous actresses as models, as in his 1920 photo of Helen Lee Worthing (Right). His images were painterly depictions of women as immobile and immortal icons. De Meyer was brought from Europe to work for Cond Nast's Vogue. He later left to work for Harper's Bazaar. To replace him in 1923 Vogue brought in Edward Steichen, who broke with the past by showing self-assured women standing tall and confronting the camera, as in his famous 1927 image of Marion Morehouse (Left)… http://popphoto2006.popphoto.com/photog ... story.html Там же: Matthew Rolston's Inspirations: Fashion Master photographer Matthew Rolston knows what's behind the allure of fashion imagery. Long live the Face! Auteur: William Ewing Traditionally in photography, as in popular culture, the face has been considered the primary site and marker of individual identity. The photographer Paul Graham recently summed up this deeply-rooted belief when he defined portraiture as ‘one of the most profound things that one can do… to simply and truly see someone, and express their sentience. To reflect the inner self through external appearance.’ The new face photography contests this assumption: ‘simply and truly’ is seen as touchingly naïve. They dismiss as myth the belief (fervent though it is) that a successful portrait captures or reveals the essence, the inner being—the soul of the subject. Moreover, they take issue with the idea that a portrait is, by definition, a credible likeness of an individual; they are too aware of the range of manipulative procedures that stand between the subject and the image… …‘I need to create a new strategy of representation,’ says photographer Alfredo Jaar, realising that portraits of the suffering have, as a genre, been drained of affect. The new sensibilities are not simply a shift in tastes or aesthetics relating to photographic issues, however. Tactics (techniques) are of course extremely varied, ranging from conventional photographic manipulation (time-exposures, multiple exposures, photomontage, serial imagery, and so on) to complex computer operations. …That is why, in their composite portraits of artist-couples, van Lawick & Muller seguey seamlessly from one partner to the other over fourteen intermediate stages, or Gary Schneider builds up faces meticulously with a small beam of light during half-hour-exposures, or John Hilliard blocks our access to his ‘Blonde’. Thomas Ruff has perplexed critics with his gargantuan faces, which appear to them to be nothing more than overblown passport photographs, conveying nothing as to personality or character. But that’s the point: there is nothing to tell, nothing to hide, beyond what is seen. http://www.elysee.ch/index.php?id=120&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=3&tx_ttnews[backPid]=143&cHash=ca7aa6ce4d |

Tomoko Sawada was born in in Kobe, Hyogo, Japan, in 1977. She graduated from Seian University of Art and Design in 2000 and completed a postgraduate course the following year. In 2000, Sawada was awarded a Special Prize in the Canon New Century of Photography competition. In 2004, she won the 29th Kimura Ihei Memorial Photography Award and the Young Photographer in New York Award at the twentieth Annual Infinity Awards. She held a solo exhibition of her work at Zabriskie Gallery in New York in 2003. Her work has also been shown as part of group shows like "The Self" (Photoespana, Madrid, 2002) and "About Face: Photography and the Death of the Portrait" In Kobe, Japan, I used an instant ID photo machine to produce my first work entitled "ID400." The photo machine, a small vending machine-like contraption, can be found in numerous locations around the city. Tomoko Sawada — Fundació Joan Miró: It all began when Tomoko Sawada was a student at the Seian University of Art and Design in Kyoto. That year, the compulsory subject was self-portraiture - an opportunity for the young artist to tackle this classic genre and reinvent it or appropriate it in an original way. Her teacher had been a pupil of Morimura - famous for including his own portrait in masterpieces of Western art - which meant that the basic tenets of her work were clearly established. At the age of twenty-two, Tomoko Sawada produced one of her first series, ID 400 (1999), a hundred passport-sized black-and-white photos: good girls and naughty girls, classical and modern girls, girls with thick or plucked eyebrows. The series was produced with the minimum of technical resources: a photo machine at a petrol station. After this set of individual photos, Sawada began to explore in the opposite direction: group photographs, with a series of class photos in which the uniformed girls are the artist herself (School Days, 2006). This computer-generated series questioned the place of the individual within the group, originality in the midst of uniformity, and the values of the first social mould in life, which in Japan is the school. In her work, Tomoko Sawada does not judge or condemn Japanese social customs but simply makes the viewer notice them. In Omiai (2001), she concentrated on the continuing practice of arranged marriages (10% of marriages since 1995, but 70% fifty years ago). The girl's parents have a portfolio made up in a professional photographer's studio in order to present the future bride, posing and dressed for any occasion, to possible suitors. Sawada dresses herself in traditional kimonos or Western tailored suits or as a professional woman, to present these candidates for marriage in the appropriate poses for catching the ideal husband. …Gothic and Kawaii For the exhibition in the Espai 13 at the Joan Miró Foundation, Tomoko Sawada has created a new series of photographs - Decoration - in which she portrays a way of dressing that can be seen in particular in the Harajuku district in Tokyo: the Gothic Lolitas. http://fundaciomiro-bcn.org/exposicio.p ... osicio=909 Interview June 11, 2008 Tomoko Sawada Tomoko Sawada is a fast-rising star in Japan's contemporary photography scene. Her self-portraits from the past decade explore the endless permutations of a national female identity. Japanese independent curator Noriko Fuku — who co-organized New York's International Center for Photography group show Heavy Light: Recent Photography and Video from Japan with ICP curator Christopher Phillips — talks to Sawada about her work and the ideas behind her multiple photographic selves. NF: The first time I saw your work was in the New Cosmos of Photography catalogue in 2000. Your work ID400 (1999) won the Special Prize. At the time, I had a hunch that you were from the Kansai region. Your work has a particularly Kansai sense of vitality and humor. Can you tell me a bit about that work and how you came to make it? TS: I first came across self-portraiture as a student in junior college. After transferring to a university, I began to focus on photography. I studied the history of photography, as well as the work of contemporary photographers from around the world, while learning the newest techniques on a daily basis… …NF: When you look at the work of Morimura or Yanagi, what do you think the similarities and differences are between your own work and theirs? TS: My work is often compared with Morimura's, although not with Yanagi's. The first artist I knew about who was making self-portraits was Cindy Sherman, and Morimura was the second. Since he was a famous person out of a textbook to me, being in the same exhibition with him was like being in the same company as Andy Warhol or Man Ray. But as artists, the only thing Morimura and I have in common is a methodology; otherwise, our themes are completely different. Following the tradition of the likes of Cindy Sherman Sawada puts her own body at the focus of her work, never attempting to answer the question of who is Tomoko Sawada. Her photo series Omiai shown in the MAK exhibition Desire to Mimic is a succession of photographs of herself as a young woman wanting to get married, taken for a Tokyo marriage brokers’ institute. In Japan it is customary for young women to get sent to a portrait studio and have their “model photos” taken in the hope to make a good match. Tomoko Sawada stages herself a good thirty times: wearing a traditional kimono, a sexy tiger-look coat, a simple black business outfit, etc. http://www.photographie.com/?evtid=103755&lang1=en Wooster Collective: Print Archive, October 9, 2007 The "HISTORY" issue of the always terrific THEME Magazine hit newstands last week. If you haven't checked it out yet, be sure to pick up a copy. Include in the new issue are some amazing stories including a profile on Tomoko Sawada. At first glance, Sawada's latest series of work, Schoolgirls: School Days looks like a classroom portrait, but when you look closely you see that all of the girls are actually the artist. * Beneath the Clothes The English say that “Beauty is only skin deep,” the Romanians muse that “Beauty without wisdom is like a flower in the mud,” while the Chinese claim that “If there is light in the soul, there will be beauty in the person.” Yet, these universal proverbs that extol the inner self only sound good on paper, or when spoken by a wise grandmother. How do we know what really lies just beneath our clothes? How do we see the unseen in ourselves? How do we find out if light and wisdom really dwell beneath all that skin and fabric? Follow along with Khadija Al-Salami as she films the feisty Najmia exploring the streets of Sana'a uncovered, boisterous and proud of being her free, unfettered self. See images of how Tomoko Sawada of Japan changes her identity 400 times over, in her attempts to explore the relationship between appearance and the inner self http://imaginingourselves.imow.org/pb/I ... =71&lang=1 |

Graham Ovenden Born 1943 in Alresford, Hampshire, England; English painter, fine art photographer, writer and architect. Born in Alresford into a Fabian household, Ovenden attended Itchen Grammar School (1954-59) and was taught music privately by Albert Ketelby. Ovenden went on to be a student at the Royal College of Music, before he eventually turned to the visual arts. His 1950s street photographs of London's children's street culture have been published as Childhood Streets (1998). In his youth he was mentored by Lord David Cecil and Sir John Betjeman. He attended the Southampton School of Art, and graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1968. His main fame has been as a painter, and he seems to have begun painting from 1962/3. Ovenden is noted as a photographer in his own right, and his book States of Grace (1993) is highly sought after by collectors and is now almost impossible to obtain. Graham Ovenden ~ Publications http://ruralists.com/artists/grahamoven ... tions.html Among his books on Victorian photography are: Pre Raphaelite Photography (1972); Victorian Children (1972); Victorian Erotic Photography (1973); A Victorian Album - Julia Margaret Cameron and Her Circle (1975); Alphonse Mucha Photographs (1974); Clementina Lady Hawarden (1974); Hill & Adamson, Photographers (1973); Lewis Carroll (1984). He also curated the 1993/4 exhibition Recording Angels, The Work of Lewis Wickes Hine. Graham Ovenden’s Photography Graham Ovenden Childhood Streets New York, Ophelia Editions, 1998 ISBN 1-888425-10-5 The Black and White Art Photographer Lucienne Zeger Ltd, 1990 Journal 5, January 1992 — contains 12 reproductions of Ovenden's photographs of the East End of London. … Darbai saugomi Moderna Museet, Stokholme, Hasselblad kolekcijoje Goteburge, Kiasma muziejuje, Helsinkyje, Winterthur fotografijos muziejuje Šveicarijoje, kitose svarbiose kolekcijose. Preš daugiau nei dešimtmetį sukurti Igorio Savčenko darbai atrodo itin šiuolaikiški. Naudodamas klasikinę sidabro želatininę fotografiją kritikuoja pačią fotografijos mediją. Darbuose vis keliamas klausimas apie galimybę atvaizduoti realius vaizdus. Savčenko stebėjimo objektu neretai pasirenka ne supančią aplinką, bet senas fotografijas, televizijos transliuojamus vaizdinius. Radikaliausiais darbais autorius visiškai panaikina regėjimo galimybę, suvokėjas tiesiog susiduria su aklina tamsa ar visiškai baltu fotografijos lakštu ir autoriaus komentaru. Radikaliai ribodamas regėjimo galimybę Savčenko kelia svarbius klausimus apie vizualinės industrijos niveliaciją. Ну, и раз уж про фестивали, поездки, обильные иллюстрациями галереи — Das Festival der belarusischen Kultur Good-BY II: 24.07-02.08.2008 Berlin, Freiburg (Deutschland) Молодежь тянется к Родченко: http://goodby2.futureincommon.com/foto_ ... e00010.jpg http://goodby2.futureincommon.com/photo1_de.shtml О выставке Generation TO GO, о которой по соседству был разговор: Teilnehmer: Tine Casper Aleksey Doroschtschenko (Be) http://futureincommon.com/gtg/doroshenko-de.html Olya Ivanova (Ru) Лежащие девушки в «Лицах» практически выпадают, умиротворены и прекрасны… http://www.olyaivanova.com/ Это, насколько я понимаю, почти та самая «Яшика с двумя глазами»: http://www.olyaivanova.com/imgs2/foto/archive/1.jpg Такие ссылки еще имеются: Young Photographers United http://photographer.ypu.org/olyaivanova NowNow Gallery http://nownow.com.au/gallery.php?album= ... la-ivanova Margarete Klenner Dmitriy Kuklin Alex Mart Maryia Ramanava http://futureincommon.com/gtg/ramanava-de.html http://www.maryiaramanava.net/ Если я правильно все прочитал, то имеются два участника, привязанных к Беларуси. * http://futureincommon.com/gtg/ex-de.html |

Pierre Gonnord замечен на странице пресс-релиза о выставке "Nuevas Historias — a new view of Spanish Contemporary Photography": Nuevas Historias Kulturhuset S. Stockholm, 03 Oct-25 Jan 2009 The exhibition "Nuevas Historias — a new view of Spanish Contemporary Photography" includes works by more than 28 Spanish artists with the aim to put the spotlight on an area of contemporary photography that is still largely unknown to many people but deserves all attention. The exhibition is the most extensive presentation of contemporary Spanish photography outside Spain. …The desire to come to terms with history may be a possible explanation for the powerful expression of photography in Spain. The participating artists in "Nuevas historias - a new view of Spanish photography" are joined by an interest in approaching notions such as cultural identity, heritage and history. The country's wide spectrum of regions, languages and cultural diversity is reflected in the multi-varied expressions and constitutes a point of departure for many of the works. Curators are Timothy Persons, creator of the Helsinki School, curatorial advisor to the director of Kiasma, Director of Professional Studies Program and Senior lecturer at the University of Art and Design Helsinki together with producer Estelle af Malmborg, curator at Kulturhuset, Stockholm. The exhibition will be accompanied by a book written by Timothy Persons and Bill Kouwenhoven, independent curator and photography critic of Berlin and New York, and published by German art book publisher, Hatje Cantz. There will also be an extensive website in relation to the exhibition and book project. http://www.photography-now.com/popup_au ... gen=T63344 Интересно, что шведы тоже эту фотографию выбрали для анонса: http://www.kulturhuset.stockholm.se/ |

_istor.jpg http://www.3xpozicija.lt/kartografija/w ... storio.jpg См.
