Panasonic
DMC-G1, 14-45mm/F3.5-5.6/O.I.S., 45-200mm/F4.0-5.6/ O.I.S.

The story of Photokina 2008 is undoubtedly Micro Four Thirds - if for no other reason than it actually offers something a little different to talk about in the face of an endless wave of minor upgrades and 'new' compact cameras that are all but indistinguishable from their predecessors.

Obviously the main focus of visitor attention is the Lumix G1, getting its first public airing on the Panasonic stand alongside the already announced lenses (and some mockups of future lenses from the published roadmap). The camera and its accessories dominate the stand and hint at just how serious Panasonic is about its G Micro system, with the emphasis being on the idea that this is to be the start of a system, to a much greater extent than the company's previous forays into interchangeable lens territory.

Canon

After a relatively low key PMA, Canon is back with a bang at Photokina. As usual the large stand is one of the busiest at the show, with the two recently announced DSLR models, the EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 50D taking pride of place - and getting the most attention, along with the long hoped for 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS. The very lovely and rather pricey new 24mm F1.4 L II lens is also on display.

Also drawing the crowds are the new high-end PowerShots, the 14.7 MP G10 (which, like its predecessors, is built like a tank but has a far more useful 28-140mm zoom range) and the twin SX10 IS (10MP CCD) and SX1 IS (10MP CMOS) superzooms — the latter here in prototype form only. Elsewhere there's the usual brace of new compact PowerShots (including the SD990 IS and SD880 IS - plus the four models announced in late August (SX110 IS, A2000 IS, A1000 IS and its girlie sibling, the E1).

Photokina 2008
A look at Olympus' new mid-range E-System Four Thirds DSLR
by Ian Burley

New higher-spec mid-range DSLR, with articulating LCD, previewed by Olympus

Olympus has shown a mock-up of its next Four Thirds E-system DSLR. This is a conventional - if the word can be used - DSLR, rather than a non-reflex, mirror-less, Micro Four Thirds camera, which Olympus has also revealed plans for producing (see separate story coming soon).

Details are sketchy, but after talking to various Olympus people this morning, my understanding is that the new, and as-yet unnamed, DSLR will slot inbetween the flagship E-3 and the mid-range E-520. The new model looks very similar to the E-3, but will be a metal frame and engineering plastics shell, rather than the exotic injection moulded light alloy structure of the E-3. On the other hand, I was told that it's likely that the new camera will have a certain level of weather sealing.

Other similarities to the E-3 include an articulating live view screen, though it's not yet clear if it will be a larger or higher resolution version of the E-3's 2.5 inch screen. One noticeable difference is the reappearance of a mode selection knob on the left 'shoulder' of the camera - from the photographer's viewpoint behind the camera. Opinion has been polarised concerning the E-3's design which relies entirely on mode buttons and adjustment wheels.

We hope that Olympus will install a sensor similar in quality to the 12 megapixel LiveMOS part currently used by Four Thirds partner, Panasonic Lumix, in their new DMC-G1 Micro Four Thirds camera. The new sensor is not only higher in resolution than the 10 megapixel sensor that Olympus makes do with at the moment, but it also exhibits significantly better high ISO image quality…

Fuji promises better than F31 performance

Super CCD EXR is a combination of a re-arranged color filter array and data readout design that allows the sensor to offer high dynamic range or improved high-ISO performance for relevant shooting conditions. Its design allows it to operate in three modes - high resolution, high dynamic range or high ISO, low noise - depending on the shooting conditions.

The new color filter array is designed so that there are always adjacent pixels recording the same color. This allows pixel binning (the combination of information from adjacent pixels to make larger effective pixels and help reduce noise), of pixels recording the same color. The result should be 6 megapixel images with none of the false color that can appear in existing pixel-binning modes which combine information from different colored pixels. "We think the signal-to-noise ratio of the sensor means pixel quality in dark regions is superior to the F31fd," Nishimura.

A dual readout system on the chip allows alternate pixels to be read-out part-way through the exposure. This means that half of the photodiodes are only exposed for a short period of time. These reduced-exposure pixels are less likely to become saturated and hence will retain highlight detail. This allows the sensor to record in up to an 800% dynamic range expansion mode even at its base sensitivity setting.

…Fujifilm will not be applying the technology to larger chips, though. "From a business point of view, compacts are most important to us," said Nishimura: "and the technology is designed to address the challenges faced by small sensors. It could, technically be scaled up to APS-C size but the large pixels of those chips already have good performance." It's also unlikely that the technology will appear in other manufacturers' products, he said: "For someone else to use this technology they'd have to use our sensor, our digital signal processor and our software, because it's so different to conventional Bayer sensors. We can't imagine others wanting to do that."

Print Size

3:4 - Classic screen, 16:9 - Wide screen.
Или вообще 2 значения - Wide и Classic(3:2 или 4:3 решается из соотношений удобства только).

Hasselblad

Swedish medium-format specialist Hassleblad is showing off a wide selection of scaled-up loveliness. The recently announced H3D II 50 megapixel camera is on show - the first time many people have got to see it - deliveries should start in October. The HTS 1.5 combined teleconverter and tilt/shift mechanism is here, prior to arriving in shops in January.

Prototype versions of a new 35-90mm F4-5.6 Asperical zoom are also on show, with the first examples due to ship by December.

Tripods

The sturdiest names in tripods are all here, showing off their wares. There are a variety of heights and weights, materials and degrees of flexibility - heads are on show that pivot and clamp in every conceivable way - but this year, in the timeless tradition of camera supports, the in-vogue number of legs to possess is three.

Lighting

All the best-known lighting companies are here at the show. There are reflectors big enough to impress Bond villians and well-lit models aplenty, with all the exhibitors trying to maximise their time in the spotlight.

Photokina 2008 : Wouter photoblog

Черно-белый отчет о выставке

…So I quickly moved on to the Leica booth below. OK, it is too expensive (I am no collector or dentist), but I really wanted to check out the Leica M8 and M8.2. I made a promise to someone to compare the noise of the shutter between both cameras and the M8.2 is absolutely quieter. It felt so great, had a very solid feel, and the rangefinder was very bright. And how great, they added a stupid auto setting too on the camera so the dentist now really can’t afford not to use the camera anymore. Just a quick note about the new S2, one mighty camera. A medium format camera equally sized as a EOS 1D Mark III or D3. Will do well I think in the rental business…

…I liked it how they improved the user interface of Photoshop, too simplify the most important tasks. And they introduced the target adjustment tool too in Photoshop (borrowed from Lightroom).

…I think it is a pity that Olympus doesn’t have any serious Camedia cameras anymore, like the C5050 and ultimately the C8080.

…It seems unlikely that Sony will introduce a follow up for the DSC-V1 & V3, and won’t create a digital Hexar either.

Everyone wanted time with the D90 and there were only three in the booth. So, I tried to get in a faster moving line. It was slower. I saw an opening and went for the more remote third camera location, only to have the D90 taken away by one of the Nikon folks to fix the security tether that had snapped. Back to the line. I did eventually get hands-on. It feels like a big step up from the D80, almost a D300, but a little more compact. The viewfinder and LCD are quite similar. Video mode was decent at 720p but limited to 5 minute clips. The AF doesn’t work during movie mode so you have to manually focus while shooting. Cool feature, though, and I’m sure it will only improve. And. I doubt that the Canon 5DmkII will be the last to emulate the D90.

…Where to next? Canon, to check out the 5DmkII. If I thought the crowd was big at the Nikon booth to see the D90, I hadn’t tried to see Canon’s highly anticipated 5D successor. No worries. I waited my turn and got to handle the camera of myth and legend. It felt like a 5D. No great surprise there. The LCD looks like any of the recent Nikons. Again not a shocker. I did get to see a sample of Canon’s movie mode implementation, though. They raised the bar with full 1080p HD recording and it looks good. Maybe a little too many compression artifacts for my taste, but very detailed and sharp. Look, dedicated, high-end HD cams will do a better job because that is what they were designed to do. I’m sure the 5DmkII will take excellent pictures because that is what it was designed to do. Time will tell to see how this market convergence works itself out.

Photokina Interview Series: Panasonic

There's no doubt that the star of Photokina 2008 was the Panasonic G1 - it was certainly the most talked about product as we made our way around the show for our usual round of meetings and presentations. We caught up with a large group of Panasonic's Japanese Digital Still Camera planning, engineering and marketing team, including Mr Matsumoto, the Director of the DSC unit, for an in-depth discussion of the Micro Four Thirds system and the future of the digital SLR. They kindly agreed to us publishing some of the conversation. Check out the second in our series of Photokina interviews after the link…
