I choose the six images to the right as examples because they each have their own unique way of revealing what the camera recorded (objective) and how I arrived at the what I experienced (subjective) while exposing the scene. The top three I included detailed printing information, such as contrast(s), burning and dodging. The bottom three I included the strait print, finished darkroom print and the final retouched photograph.
All images print differently, each with a certain voice. Sometimes what I feel will be an easy print ends up taking hours and hours to hone into the right balance of tonality, the proper luminousity. Other images that seem likely to be difficult fall into place rather quickly.
I'll always be a student of printing, learning from every print I make. With each photograph, there is a new solution to achieve the final result, to find the balance between the objective negative and the subjective mind.
Artist Statement:
Art is an expression of life that transcends both time and space. We must explore our own souls through art to give a new form and a new meaning to the nature of the world.
Photography is my chosen medium to project my inner vision into the world, to state in aesthetic creation the deepest psychic and personal experiences of my being. The creation of a photograph is the unfolding of the personality, the deepening of the personal dimension of the soul.
There is a certain point in time, where the harmony of light, atmosphere, and spirit collide, a place in the cosmos where the rhythm of nature unfolds in front of the camera. This can only happen once.
I hope my fortuitous images bring to you the wonder I have seen.

Rolfe studied landscape photography with Mark Citret, an associate of Ansel Adams, prior to entering Brooks Institute of Photography, in Santa Barbara, California, in 1993. While a student at Brooks Institute, he studied with Nick Dekker, who introduced him to alternative processes and pushed him to create powerful images.

States, Study III, 2005, States, Study IX, 2006, Lith print, selenium toned:

SFMOMA's world-renowned photography collection includes pictures from the mid-1800s to the present that capture key moments in the development of the medium and reflect a wide range of practices. Beginning October 27 the installation focuses on the theme of portraiture. Works on view include daguerreotypes, Alfred Stieglitz's images of his wife Georgia O'Keeffe, and studio protraits by Seydou Keïta. Other highlights include Nicholas Nixon's The Brown Sisters — a remarkable series of 32 photographs of Nixon's wife and her three sisters taken annually since 1975 — and Rineke Dijkstra's video The Buzz Club.
This exhibition will be temporarily closed from September 10 through October 26, 2007.
