Эфир. Ага. Я днями тоже обнаружил… Сходил, купил себе дешевый китайский микрофон на всякий случай, а то из двух уже шнурки повыдирал в горячке эфира… Действительно, важно ко всему относиться с доброй улыбкой.

NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY
PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT PRIZE 2007
ANNOUNCEMENT OF SHORTLIST
Four photographers have been shortlisted for the £12,000 Photographic Portrait Prize, the major international photography award. This is the fifth year of the National Portrait Gallery’s Photographic Portrait Prize (previously the John Kobal Photographic Portrait Award from 1993-2002), which has firmly established itself as the leading showcase for new talent in portrait photography. The judges have selected 60 portraits for the exhibition from 6,900 submissions entered by 2,700 photographers from around the world. This is the largest number of submissions ever entered for the prize, with 1,835 more entries than last year and 679 more photographers submitting work. The exhibition will run from 8 November 2007–24 February 2008 at the National Portrait Gallery, London.
The Photographic Portrait Prize 2007 will showcase the work of some of the most talented emerging young photographers, alongside that of established professionals, photography students and gifted amateurs. Selected anonymously from an open competition, the international mix of entrants reflects the diversity of styles and approaches to the portrait genre, encompassing editorial, advertising and fine art images.
As well as the first-prize winner and three runners-up, this year’s exhibition will feature the Godfrey Argent Award, a special award which this year acknowledges an outstanding portrait taken by an exhibitor aged between 18 and 25.
With its substantial prize fund and high-profile exhibition and tour, the Photographic Portrait Prize will continue the Gallery’s long tradition of championing the work of the very best contemporary portrait photographers. The following four photographers have been shortlisted for the Photographic Portrait Prize 2007:
Michelle Sank for Janine (from a series, commissioned for the exhibition Reality Crossings, Germany) Michelle Sank was born in Capetown, South Africa in 1953 and is now based in England. She received a B.A in Fine Art in South Africa, and a Masters degree in Photography from De Montfort University, Leicester. Her work has been included in several group exhibitions across the world, including the John Kobal Portrait Prize in 2001, and she has recently had solo exhibitions in Belfast, Liverpool, London, Mexico and the USA. Her shortlisted portrait is one of a series commissioned for exhibition at Reality Crossings, the 2nd Fotofestival in Mannheim, Germany, 2007. Michelle worked with the residents of the Schifferkinderheim (children’s home) in Mannheim, and this portrait is of one of the teenagers living in the home.
Julieta Sans for Lucila a.m. Julieta Sans was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1979. She studied English Literature at the University of Buenos Aires and Photography at the EFC, Buenos Aires before moving to London, where she qualified with a Postgraduate Certificate in Photography from Central St Martins. She works in London, as a creative researcher in advertising, and also freelances on photography projects. Her work was recently featured in the group exhibition, Amour Expo, Cabourg, Normandy, 2007, which she also co-curated, and in the group exhibition Day Four’s Winter Notes on Summer Expressions in 2006, also published as a book. Included in the Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition for the first time, her shortlisted portrait is of her friend, Lucila, photographed in Lucila’s old bedroom at her father’s flat in Buenos Aires.
David Stewart for Alice & Fish (from the series Relations) David Stewart was born in Lancaster in 1958 and has been based in London for over 25 years. He studied photography at Blackpool College (1979-1981) and worked as assistant to a number of photographers in London before setting up his own business as a commercial photographer. Initially focussing on still life, David has specialised in portraiture for several years, and has published one book of his work to date – Fogeys, which also toured as a solo exhibition. His work has been included in previous Photographic Portrait Prize exhibitions - his portrait ‘Mister Valentine’ (of his father), also from the series Relations, was included in last year’s exhibition. Shortlisted for the first time this year, David’s portrait is of his teenage daughter Alice photographed in October 2006 ‘in her “emo” phase’ at Grange-over-Sands in Cumbria.
Jonathan Torgovnik for Joseline Ingabire with her daughter Leah Batamuliza, Rwanda (from the series Intended Consequences) Born in Tel Aviv in 1969, Jonathan Torgovnik began his career as a combat photographer in the Israeli army. He moved to New York in his early twenties and graduated with a BFA degree from the School of Visual Arts. His photographs have appeared in publications including Newsweek, Sunday Times Magazine, and Paris Match and displayed in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the US and Europe as well as being featured in the permanent collections of museums such as The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Bibliotheque National De France in Paris. His shortlisted portrait is from the series Intended Consequences: mothers of genocide, children of rape, documenting the lives of Tutsi women who had been the victims of sexual violence during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
The prize-winners for the National Portrait Gallery’s Photographic Portrait Prize will be announced at a ceremony on Tuesday 6th November 2007 at 7pm. The Godfrey Argent Award for the best portrait taken by a photographer aged between 18 and 25 will also be presented that evening. The Press View for the exhibition will be Wednesday 7 November 11am-1pm. The exhibition opens to the public on Thursday 8 November. The exhibition will tour in 2008.
